Gear galore

Getting here is half the battle. Good gear lets you think about the hunt, not the drive or hike. To start, I will mention tires.  Seems silly but if you have had a stuck truck on the ice and mud you can appreciate this.  A good friend of mine who works in the tire industry dealing with mining turned me on to the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac. It is a commercial tire that is a cross between an all terrain and mud terrain. I am on my second set, the first lasting 40k on my heavy 4 door Chevy Duramax. This tire has provided the best on road behavior coupled with outstanding grip on mud and ice of any I have tried including BFGoodrich, Toyo, Cooper, Falken, and Dunlop. They also have superior puncture resistance,  a main reason so many mine trucks run them. You can get them through discounttiredirect.com or tirerack.com and you will not be disappointed.

Tires for your feet may be the most important piece of gear once you make it to the bottom of the hill. Time tested I can happily report the Cabela's Alaska Hunter by Meindl boots have held up to Nevada's beatings going on 3 seasons. I cannot say the same for the Denali series as I destroyed two pairs in one season and got a dew befuddled looks from the girls at the counter. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Alaska-Hunter-Boots-by-Meindl/721274.uts

Last for this review is the always faithful Buck's Bag Upland Vest.  I have used this for the last 4 years without issue or incident. There may be more streamlined options out there but the Buck's Bag is durable and readily disperses weight and can easily accomodate the gallon of water I haul for dogs and myself. The water bladder that comes with the bag has a crummy mouthpiece but works well other than that.  I stash 2 nalgenes and a fabric bowl in the back compartment for dogs and everyone is happy.  I got my bag from Scheels but they can be had online via Uplanderswarehouse.com as well as others, it appears amazon is currently out of them.  I am still interested in a backpack type bag such as the Badlands pack, but for now I have no reason to look elsewhere for a bag.

Holy moly

It has been some time since I created this blog, but have yet to post anything of substance.  Fear not, while I have not been blogging, I have been hunting and have plenty of good gear to tell you about in coming posts including boots, guns, vests, tires, and knives.  Stay tuned, stay wild.

First post on this blog, or any blog for that matter.  My name is Jordan and I reside in Nevada where I spend my time chasing birds and fish, and generally tinkering with things.  I am also a self-confessed gear junkie.  I have tried so many different things concerning my aforementioned interests, I figure I should make something so that people can learn from my abundant failures and mistakes as well as the scarce and glimmering success I have been so fortunate to experience.  I have tested LOTS of stuff over the years and am going to begin reviewing things so people like you can make educated choices on when where and what to waste your hard earned shekels on.   Max, my one year old Pudelpointer will help too (in his given capacity).
Be warned: I am going to start this off with a "tried and true" selection of goodies from my gear cache.  We are heading directly into upland and waterfowl season in a little over a week, so I must undergo my ritual of cleaning, organizing, and obsessing over some of my favorite things.  Be careful, you might find something you cannot live without.  I warned you.
